

Samburu National Reserve
Situated in the western corner of Samburu in the rift valley Kenya. It’s bordered by Ewaso nyiro river which separates it from the from the Buffalo springs national reserve. The reserve covers an area of 165kilometer square and is located around 345 kilometers from Nairobi. The reserve lies within the ecological zone V-which is classified arid and semi arid with moisture index of 42-57, which indicates that evapo-transpiration is greater than available moisture. The days are extremely hot while the nights are cool. The annual mean temperatures range between 18 degrees and 30degrees while annual rainfall is 354mm with peaks in November and April. The dry season starts late may up to October and this is when large concentration of animals is found in the reserve due to lush vegetation along the ewaso nyiro river the main water source of reserve and the community.
WILDLIFE
The reserve is rich in wildlife with some for abundance in rare northern specialist such as the Grevy zebra, somalin ostrich, reticulated giraffe and Beisa oryx (kwon as Samburu special) elephants and large predator such as lions, leopard, cheetah and wild dog are also important sightings and are common attraction to this protected area. Abundant wildlife with over 450 species record, with 5 species categorized as vulnerable including the African darter, great egret, white headed vulture, martial eagle and yellow billed oxpecker.
